Urbanist article spreads word on SR 104 crossing

Urbanist writer Ryan Packer published a story in the online newsletter July 8 on North Sound Bicycle Advocates’ efforts to create a safer crossing over State Route 104 between Shoreline and Edmonds.

Packer, who attended a site visit to the Interurban Trail during the spring, described advocates’ efforts to secure funding for a study - a first step in obtaining grants required to actually build a bridge (or a tunnel) - and their vision for a continuous and safe route for riders and walkers on the trail.

Since September, 2023, when around a dozen elected officials and public agency staff rode bikes to view the trail gap between Shoreline and Edmonds, advocates have conducted roughly monthly site visits. When viewed up close, officials gain a much clearer understanding of what is possible to complete the missing gap by bridging SR 104 at either Wallingford Avenue or from behind Home Depot. The original right-of-way of the Interurban Electric Railway, which ran between North Seattle and Everett for 40 years, is in the treed strip to the east of Aurora Transit Center.
