Toole Design offers glimpse into trail bridge concept

Toole Design Group, one of the leading active transportation and public space planning and engineering companies in the US, has kindly provided concept drawings of what a bridge over State Route 104 could look like. The conceptual drawings build on a vision of linking the two disconnected ends of the Interurban Trail between Edmonds and Shoreline.

“We are advocating for a study that includes an alternatives analysis, so this is really just one of what should be multiple options,” said Dustin Dekoekkoek, Seattle office director for Toole Design.

North Sound Bicycle Advocates (the new name for Edmonds Bicycle Advocacy Group) has been actively encouraging collaboration among neighboring cities, Washington State and the two counties to fund a study to explore various crossing options.

Getting a formal study completed is an essential part of lining up future design, engineering and construction of a bridge. Such studies typically cost $100-$200,000 depending on the level of detail sought. Once completed, a public agency could then select a preferred route from the study options and pursue grants.

In the meantime, the concept drawings kindly prepared by Toole Design in Seattle are enabling public officials to see how one potential route could be a practical way of connecting both ends of the trail via a bridge.
